Why do you pursue science?

Science is the most important, the most beautiful and necessary thing in human life. As Chekhov said, "... science has always been and will be the highest manifestation of love, that by means of it alone will man conquer nature and himself." In the process of scientific activity, I discover something new, previously unknown to me; I study opinions and views on a specific problem of people of different ages and professions. Speaking at conferences and roundtables, I have a unique opportunity to communicate with like-minded people, to exchange experience and knowledge.

For me, science is life, the opportunity to realize my ideas and implement my projects. Scientific activity offers great challenges and new opportunities.

Why do you pursue science?

In fact, the old age begins with the moment when a person has lost the ability to learn. Once an ancient man looked up and thought about the course of stars. Through tens and hundreds of years, it helped his descendants to predict the time of sowing and  harvesting years. In such a way, humanity has found the first astronomer and agronomist. Having sated, the ancient man looked under his feet and found amazing plants that allowed to strengthen and restore health. Therefore, humanity has found the first medic and botanist. Healed, the ancient man explored the area to understand where it is more profitable to set his settlement for better protection from raids. He thought out shelter for the weak, hidden ways for the retreat of women and children. Fortified points for soldiers and observation posts for sentries. Therefore,  humanity has found the first tactician.

Time passed by. Only those tribes survived and grew in number, which aspired after knowledge. The sun of history was down for those peoples who were great but recomposed themselves by it. The patchwork of the world political map was made of countries that longed for knowledge and achievements.

"Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!" wrote Lewis Carroll. It is with this quote that I would characterize the modern situation of a man who is keen on science. I like this dynamics very much. That is why I pursue science.

Denis Mironov

Why do you pursue science?

I began to do the first research at school. Even then, I noticed that I enjoyed not only the acquisition of new knowledge, its systematization, results achieved, and the assertion of my own position but also the delivery of this knowledge to my peers. These factors have become fundamental in choosing a profession. Now I am a faculty member.

Research activity is a "wise teacher" who brings up personality, develops memory and power of observation, accuracy, delicacy, and aesthetics of thinking. This is a powerful tool for self-expression and, it seems to me, a necessary condition for obtaining the "status" of a truly qualified and competitive specialist. It is impossible to become a first-class specialist in your professional industry without immersion in the industry itself.

Engaging in science, you begin to understand better how this world is organized, and feel yourself involved in its processes. For me, research work is always associated with a great deal of risk and boldness, since a researcher shoulders a knowingly difficult burden and is obliged to show really sophisticated patience in his work. This brings up a sense of responsibility and "intellectual honesty."
