What makes our university be in demand

What changes await applicants in 2023, what trends exist in the labor and education market today, and how to prepare for successful admission to a university - USUE rector Yakov Silin spoke about this in an interview with regional television companies from Pervouralsk, Polevskoy, Nizhny Tagil, and Novouralsk.

Just as in 2022, applicants may apply for five universities, and at each university only for five areas of study. The applicant has the right to submit an application both for state-financed openings and for tuition-fee places, indicating the mode of study: full-time, intra-extramural or extramural.

“I would like to remind you that documents are accepted in one stream, so you need to weigh whether it is worth spending precious time trying to enter universities in faraway cities, if there are respectable educational institutions within easy reach in the Urals. Our region is industrial, it has strong educational traditions and well-developed science. Almost any promising profession can be got at local universities,” USUE rector Yakov Silin said.

It is important that a prestigious education can be got without leaving your hometown. The network of USUE Territorial Access Centers allows you to study remotely with qualified teachers and build a career at the same time.

“Each city in our region is unique in its own way, and if young people applied their knowledge at local enterprises and at municipalities’ administrations, the Urals would have a brilliant future!” Ya.P. Silin says.

It is important to make the right choice, since the admission of documents to universities this year, as it was in the past, will take place in one stream. Besides, in 2023, there will be a reduction in the deadlines for accepting documents for bachelor’s and specialist programs for all modes of study. You can apply for state-financed places appropriations until July 20, and for tuition-fee places - until August 19. Therefore, it is worth approaching the beginning of the admission campaign with the maximum awareness of what goal you set.

“There is very little time left before the final determination of graduates to choose the Unified State Examinations. My advice to you: don’t take the lazy way out by choosing one additional exam - that will limit your options. By taking exams in two or three subjects, you will get excellent results in at least one of them and increase your chances of admission. And if you succeed in several ones, the choice of areas of study will be wider. In any case, you will win,” Yakov Silin explained.

USUE, although a relatively young university, celebrated its 55th anniversary in 2022. It was originally established to provide specialists to the most powerful industrial region of the country and it still performs this function. Many enterprises purposefully apply to the university with applications for personnel of both an economic and financial profiles, and for qualified managers, lawyers, biotechnologists, and IT specialists.

There is a trend towards the merging of competencies: today a financier should understand audit, computer technologies, and personnel management issues. These requirements of the time can be met by a university that implements all of these areas. USUE educational programs are being constantly improved, considering the labor market, economic and technological realities.

“The university is in demand! There is a strong connection with employers: career guidance events are held with the participation of dozens of major companies in the region; USUE runs the Career Center and thanks to it, about 85% of university students get internships and jobs. We are developing a scientific component: we have our own dissertation councils, where applicants from many regions come to defend dissertations; we have our own scientific journals with a high citation index; developments of USUE scientists form the basis of real business projects. The number of students, both Russian and foreign citizens, despite the sanctions policy and anti-Russian rhetoric of the West and the United States, is increasing every year,” USUE rector said.

The Eurasian Economic Youth Forum promotes abroad the popularity of USUE and Russian education. For example, in 2022, the EEYF brought together participants from 92 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America.

“Active preparations for the forum to be held on April 24-28 have begun as soon as the previous EEYF ended. Now it is reaching the finish line: competitions have been determined, international venues and delegations from diplomatic missions and universities confirm their participation. I can’t even guess how many participants there will be this year: in the past they were over eight thousand! The world is interested in what is happening in Russia and the Urals. Young people want to speak out and get expert opinion, and we are open to this dialogue. This year, Mayor of Yekaterinburg, Aleksei Orlov, will head the expert commission for the competition dedicated to cities. This is an opportunity to see many interesting and promising projects whose authors can be employed. It will be good if other heads of municipalities support such an initiative,” Yakov Silin, USUE Rector and chair of the EEYF Organizing Committee, added.

USUE students have the opportunity to realize themselves not only in studies and research activities but also in creativity, sports, volunteering, etc. The most active ones receive an increased scholarship, as well as special scholarships from the Governor of the Sverdlovsk region, the President of the Russian Federation, the regional and federal governments, and others.

“We are on the right way, strictly following the requirements of professional training. Therefore, the number of scholarship holders is increasing every year, and this growth has been rapid, especially in the last few years. Young people now understand their capabilities and are ready to realize them despite the highest competition. The number of international students aimed at research activity is growing and we have something to offer at the international level. This means that our teachers are doing a good job. And it is especially pleasant and valuable that our graduates return to their alma mater to transfer knowledge and experience to future generations,” the rector said.

To become better acquainted with the areas of training and ask questions to teachers and directors of the USUE Institutes, you can visit the Open Days on January 21 and March 25.
