Dina Williams talked how to transfer scientific experience

In August 2017, Ural State University of Economics received a grant from the British Consulate in Yekaterinburg to hold two cycles of seminars for students and faculty, with the invitation of one of the leading experts in business entrepreneurship, Professor Dina Williams.

Today, the lecturers and researchers of USUE took part in the roundtable devoted to the peculiarities of scientific articles publishing in Western academic journals. The event was supported by the Ural Regional Branch of the Free Economic Society of Russia.

The participants of the seminar were greeted by Sergei Rogozhin, USUE Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, "Russian educational policy is now aimed at becoming a part of the world educational community. We must integrate into the world scientific educational community. There are several ways of integration, and one of them is publications in academic journals of worldwide repute. "

The meeting was attended by Consul of the British Embassy in Moscow John Payver who spoke about the importance of interaction between business and scientists and thanked USUE for hospitality and cooperation with the consulate. "This series of seminars will help you improve the perception of entrepreneurship in education as it is in the UK and may be here in Russia," he added.

A member of the Board of the Ural branch of VEO of Russia Svetlana Pyankova: "The topic is very important even on the federal level. The VEO of Russia considers this event to be of high priority for publication activities and development. "

In her lecture, Dina Williams revealed the features of publishing in foreign journals and compared it with publication in Russian scientific journals. She spoke about her own experience of participation in blind peer review, about improving the quality of publications through the application of this method, and what the editor's refusal in the foreign publishing practice means. "A refusal is not the answer "yes" or "no". Any review is accompanied by substantial comments. This is the guidelines to follow," Dina says about the experience of her foreign colleagues. She backed up her words with statistics: from all the articles sent to an editor, less than half of the materials are submitted for review, about one-third are rejected at once. However, peer review issues no guarantee. In total, only 29% of articles are published and more than 70% are rejected at different stages. "It is very difficult to be published in Western journals. It is usual practice to be rejected," the lecturer adds.

We would like to note that this is not Dina's first visit to USUE: in the fall, she delivered a lecture on the heuristic approach to entrepreneurship . Dina Williams graduated from our University and defended her thesis there.
