HERO OF RUSSIA DAMIR YUSUPOV: IT IS SAFE TO FLY!
On December 7, International Civil Aviation Day, students of Ural State University of Economics met with the Hero of the Russian Federation, the captain of the Airbus A321 aircraft, a Ural Airlines passenger plane, Damir Yusupov, who made a successful emergency landing near Zhukovsky on August 15, 2019.
The famous pilot talked with students about the importance of choosing a future profession. Damir Kasimovich made his way to aviation as a child: his father was the commander of the Mi-8 helicopter and took his son on flights. Even then, the young man was irrevocably carried away by the romance of flight. However, it took some time before Damir Yusupov managed to become a pilot.
In 2018, he graduated from the Ulyanovsk Civil Aviation Institute (extramural studies) with a degree in Air Navigation. At the time of the incident with the Airbus A321, he had served as an aircraft captain for a year. On August 15, 2019, operating the flight U6-178 Moscow- Simferopol, in climb, the Ural Airlines plane collided with a flock of birds, after which both its engines failed.
The airbus commander decided to make an emergency landing and downed the plane right in the cornfield. The extreme landing saved the life of all 226 passengers and 7 crew members. The day after the incident, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree conferring the titles Hero of Russia to the captain and co-pilot of the Airbus A321.
Having heard the story of a terrible incident with a happy end, the students bombarded Hero Yusupov with many questions about how his life had changed after the incident and his attitude to flying.
As part of the meeting with Damir Yusupov, USUE students watched a video about the incident and a documentary about the development of civil aviation in the Urals, took part in a mini-quiz on history and professional terms of Russian aviators, and received prizes from Ural Airlines.
