The culinary competition for high school students was held at Ural State University of Economics. The contest of desserts «Gift to Mom» was dedicated to the International Women’s Day.
The participants of the competition were students from 19 Yekaterinburg schools.
Young cooks were welcomed by the USUE Rector Yakov Silin, «On the eve of a beautiful and spring holiday, we are summing up your skills. I would like to congratulate you just on the fact that you already today help your mothers. Before long, you will come to us to study. And here you will learn to cook different delicacies and you will master the art of cooking from a scientific point of view.»
Cupcakes and mini gateau, small cakes and sophisticated culinary products — to try everything the contestants offered, the jury members had to work hard. The participants made their best and presented their creations reciting poems, singing songs, and even using bulletin-board newspapers. What the dish was made of and what secret ingredients the contestants used, — the jury asked these questions to each team.
For example, three young cooks from school № 122 cooked a dish according to a 1941 recipe. Veronica Zorkina, Regina Hamatnurova and Elena Sakharova said that the composition of the ice cream Solnechny Luchik (Sunbeam) changed only in 1967.
A pupil of school No. 183 Stepan Meshcheryakov was the only boy among the contestants. He presented a cake «Cherry in chocolate.» Stepan found an Interest in culinary business in his early childhood; however, he was participating in the contest for the first time. «I have recently finished cooking classes and I’m good at cooking different dishes. Nevertheless, today I prepared a cake with a secret: almost a half-kilogram of cherry is inside it,» the schoolboy commented.
Having studied all the works presented, the jury selected the most unexpected, bright and delicious dishes. The winners received prizes. At the end of the meeting, the USUE teaching staff held a master class for the children.
