Injustice strikes a chord of anger in our hearts

Activists of USUE student groups took part in the flower-laying ceremony at the Shirokorechensky memorial “Eternal Flame” in honor of the 79th anniversary of the lifting of the Leningrad Blockade.

The chair of the Council of the Sverdlovsk regional public organization of veterans of war, labor, military operations, civil service, and pensioners, Yuri Sudakov, greeted the participants.

“On January 25, a teleconference was held, organized by the St. Petersburg Council of Veterans,” said Yuri Sudakov. “The participants unanimously supported the initiative of the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Russian Federation to recognize the Leningrad Blockade as an act of genocide, which resulted in 1,093,000 people died. Today we remember this tragedy and hope that nothing like this will ever happen again on our land.”

Zoya Pavlovna Preobrazhenskaya, who survived the blockade as a child, reminded the participants of the meeting about its horrors: “When the shelling began, I saw a convoy of aircraft flying towards the city. We hid from them in bomb shelters, then returned home. Many died of hunger. At first, my sister and I went to the funeral of each deceased in our communal apartment. But then we stopped: there were too many of them. And one evening, our father returned home from work at the fifth city power plant, got into bed and did not get up again. Then my mother died, and my sister and I were sent to a children’s home.”

They declared a moment of silence in remembrance of deceased civilians and defenders of the fatherland who gave their lives in the battles for Leningrad. Then the ceremony participants laid flowers at the foot of the Eternal Flame.

“As long as the blood of our heroic ancestors runs in our veins, as long as any injustice done in the world strikes a chord of anger in our hearts, the so-called ‘civilized West’ will see us as a threat,” Sergei Voronin said. “Leningrad is one of many historic examples when we fended off an external threat. And if necessary, we will fight back again.”
