ABOUT ECONOMY IN ENGLISH
The VII International Contest of Student Research Papers in English “Russia in the Global World: Challenges of the 21st Century” started at the university. Its participants were 50 students from Russia, Ecuador and Nigeria. The organizer of the international contest was the USUE Department of Business Foreign Language.
The participants prepared scientific reports within five thematic areas: Management, Marketing, Digitalization in Economic Space, Education in the Future, Soft and Hard Skills. The first stage was a written one. The authors of the best works were qualified for the finals of the contest — the oral presentation.
“Students learn to write scientific texts in a foreign business language, present their works and debate in English without any preparation. Such competitions help improve the skill of public speaking in a scientific context,” Tatyana Markova, an associate professor of the USUE Department of Business Foreign Language, noted.
Each participant could try his or her hand not only as a speaker but also as an expert. Students evaluated each other’s speaking, the quality of prepared presentations, and debating skills.
“I found an interesting case of rebranding a popular brand of cheese. My report presented the pros and cons of the marketing strategy. The sources for preparing the research paper were, of course, in Russian. First, I studied everything, then I composed the text, and only at the very end, I started translating it into English. It was necessary not to forget certain linguistic nuances, but overall it was not difficult,” Nikita Raksi, a third-year student at the USUE Institute of Economics and Finance, shared his impressions.
The judges will award diplomas to the authors of the three best reports in each section. The VII International Contest of Student Research Papers in English will end on March 29 with a Roundtable dedicated to the development of higher education.
