“Almost like on Earth”

As part of the USUE project “Heroes Are among Us”, students from Ural State University of Economics met Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, Russian test-cosmonaut, flight engineer in the crew of Soyuz MS-17 spacecraft. The students learned about the long-term preparation for a space flight, feelings of weightlessness and about his plans for future flights.

USUE rector Yakov Silin opened the meeting, welcoming Sergei Vladimirovich and encouraging students to take the chance to communicate with such a unique guest and dare to ask questions.

The cosmonaut gave a presentation illustrating physical preparation of future cosmonauts for a flight and their studies. The students saw Soyuz MS-17, piloted by the crew, which included Sergei Vladimirovich, and its launch into space. Sergei Kud-Sverchkov demonstrated that a sense of humor does not fail even in space, showing how crew members threw food into each other’s mouths, which, because of weightlessness, was easy to do.

The students bombarded the guest with questions, for example, about how cosmonauts celebrated holidays. Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, together with the team, spent 184 days, 23 hours, and 10 minutes in space. During this time, the crew celebrated several holidays “almost like on Earth”:

In fact, the only difference is that there are no alcoholic drinks in space, and the range of products is limited. Celebrating New Year or the birthdays of the crew members, we flew around the station playing catch-up and enjoyed ourselves with electric flashlights like sparklers. Of course, it seems that when we grow up, we become alien to such entertainments. But somersaulting in zero gravity is a sweet thing!” the cosmonaut told with pleasure.
