USUE students are world-class athletes
Ural State University of Economics honors the women’s volleyball team Uralochka-USUE - the winner of the International University Sports Festival.
The festival took place in Yekaterinburg in August 2023. Twelve teams from 10 countries competed in the volleyball championship. On its way to victory, Uralochka met with university teams from Nigeria, Argentina, and Brazil, as well as two Russian teams, always winning with a score of 3:0.
“Time and again, the university team won all-Russian championships and student sports competitions,” Nikolay Karpol, president and head coach of Uralochka, a legend of Russian volleyball, addressed the winners. “Today, you are successfully defending the sporting honor of our country at the international level, having competed with the strongest volleyball teams in the semi-finals and finals. And I would like to wish you and the university further success in sport.”
Cooperation between USUE and Uralochka began in 1982, when the team was patronized by five scientific and industrial organizations of Sverdlovsk, among which was the Sverdlovsk Institute of National Economics (SINKH). Over the past decades, Sverdlovsk became Yekaterinburg, SINKH was renamed USUE, and Uralochka won the country’s volleyball championships 25 times! Today’s victory is the contribution of a new generation of athletes to the history of their club.
“A won cup is like a bowl that is being filled drop by drop with goodness. So, with every victory you win glory for the university, for yourself, for your team, the team which level most teams in the world would still have decades to reach,” USUE rector Yakov Silin believes. “This festival is though small, but Olympiad. And you are its winners.”
The girls, led by the captain of the team, a student of the USUE Institute of Public Administration, Tatyana Selyutina, committed the medal and cup they received at the festival to the university museum for safe-keeping. Besides, the museum’s exposition was enlarged with a volleyball signed by the team members and by Nikolay Karpol.
