Behind the closed doors of USUE classrooms, it was decided which novelties we would see tomorrow on the shelves of major stores

April 11, at USUE, as part of an April Trading Week, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Supply of Sverdlovsk Oblast held trade and procurement sessions with retail chains and commodity producers.

"During the trade and procurement sessions, officials of large regional and federal retail chains, including Pyatyorochka, Monetka, Kirovsky, and Auchan, meet with commodity producers or directly with the owners of manufacturing facilities who show samples of their food products and express their desire to sell them at these retailers.During the bilateral discussion, which takes place in conditions of confidentiality, as the saying goes, "behind closed doors", contracts, agreements, arrangements on mutually beneficial cooperation are concluded," Vladimir Lazarev, deputy director of the USUE Institute of Trade, Food Technologies and Services, said. "If the price and quality satisfy the parties and there is no problem with necessary supporting documentation for the products, in the end, a buyer sees new food products in the store."

April 11, officials of three large federal retail chains gathered in conference rooms: Magnit (with head office in the Krasnodar Krai),  Lenta and Verny  (established in St. Petersburg). Near each conference room, there was a queue of managers and specialists representing Sverdlovsk food producers who wanted to offer their products.

The head of the sales department of one of the poultry farms told that she annually participated in trade sessions held at USUE, and this time she came to meet with representatives of the Magnit retail chain. "Magnit already sells our chilled semi-finished products. We want to offer an assortment of ready-made products: sausages, pelmeni, and cutlets," she shared and noted, "At the talks, sometimes you will not find a specialist whom you need, but there is an opportunity to convey the necessary information and communicate directly with partners from the trade organization." However, the head of the sales department also pointed out that from year to year the number of retailers participating in the sessions was reducing. In her opinion, "this indicates the low interest of retailers in new suppliers."

The director of a cattle-slaughtering enterprise participates in trade and procurement sessions for the first time. "We propose to the trading enterprises to do butchering and pre-packing themselves. We are already working with Lenta, Kirovsky, and Monetka, so we would like to learn about the opportunities for cooperation with other stores - Magnit and Verny," she said.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Supply of Sverdlovsk Oblast conducts Trading Weeks twice a year - in April and in November.

Annually, about 60 commodity producers of various groups of products take part in the event: dairy, meat, bread-baking, processing industries. This April session, 40 enterprises took part. Approximately 30 of them, organizers say, participate in negotiations with retailers on a regular basis.

Often the event is of informational character for participants. Large trading networks are interested in the terms of cooperation with a particular trading enterprise and vice versa. During the trade sessions, a unique opportunity is provided to establish contacts with each other and to clear up questions of concern.

Similar events take place at retailers. However, USUE is a neutral and more convenient venue for negotiations and attracts more participants.
