USUE students met with Hero of Russia, Colonel Oleg Kaskovov. The meeting was attended by the USUE Rector Yakov Silin, Vice-Rector for Social Work Roman Krasnov, Advisor to the Rector, the Hero of Russia Sergey Voronin.
Yakov Silin addressed the students, "You have a unique opportunity to see real heroes of our country. Do not miss it, ask your questions."
Oleg Kaskov spoke about his childhood and youth in Kyshtym (Chelyabinsk region), studying at the Chelyabinsk Higher Tank School, after which he was sent to the 34th motorized infantry division of the Ural Military District.
During the first Chechen war, he, being a senior lieutenant and commander of a tank platoon of the 276th motorized rifle regiment of the 34th Motorized Rifle Division of the Volga-Ural Military District, participated in military operations on the territory of the Chechen Republic.
On the eve of his birthday, April 4, 1996, the convoy was ambushed and Kaskov’s tank was hit. The tank commander was wounded, its gunner Dmitry Grankin and driver Aleksey Babin were seriously injured. Oleg Kaskov pulled his comrades out from the tank, gave them first aid, and after stifling the fire in the fighting compartment of the tank and, taking the place of the gunner, continued the battle and until the last projectile covered the withdrawal of the convoy.
For courage shown, by the Presidential Decree of June 14, 1997, Oleg Kaskov was awarded the title of Hero of Russia and the "Gold Star" medal.
The students asked the Hero of Russia many questions, especially about why he chose to become a tanker. They learned that he descended from a renowned family of military men: the brother of his grandfather Leonid Kaskov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for crossing the Oder River.
For the students, this meeting was a lesson of patriotism and courage. As Sergei Voronin noted, there will be many meetings with Heroes of Russia ahead.
Bringing up patriotism in the youth environment is one of the priority vectors for the development of Ural State University of Economics.
