Today the VIII National Economic Dictation is taking place all over the country. Ural State University of Economics has once again become the main regional venue. Thousands of USUE students tested their knowledge of economics in 40 minutes.
The economic dictation began with an address to the students by Yakov Silin, Rector of USUE:
‘The Economic Dictation has already had its history. It reflects the economic situation of our time, revealing actual problems both for Russia and for the whole world. The dictant is a continuation of our education. By testing your knowledge, you not only get new knowledge, but you can also assess your strengths and weaknesses and realise what knowledge you still need. This is a unique opportunity for self-improvement, for which no one puts grades and does not scold. Check yourself, see what you are strong in and what you are not, what knowledge is still needed’.

The theme of this year's economic dictation was ‘Strong Economy - Prosperous Russia!’ The participants were given 40 minutes to complete 30 tasks. Some of them managed with it even faster. For example, Anastasia Kopylova, a 1st year student of Human Resources Management, who participated in the Dictation for the first time, completed it in 25 minutes. The girl scored 72 points out of 100: ‘The dictation was of average difficulty for me. If you don't know the answer to a question, you can guess logically. However, the most difficult thing for me was calculating expenses. I will participate again, as I am studying in an economic university!’
Not only Russians answered questions from the field of economic theory, history, and financial tasks. This year, representatives of universities from the People's Republic of China, who are on a business visit in Yekaterinburg, expressed their desire to participate in the Dictation. Vice-rectors, directors of institutes, and teachers of the Gandong Technical Institute and Harbin Petroleum Institute tested their knowledge of economics along with other participants. Foreigners translated the tasks into their native language via the Internet and then filled in the blanks in the online version of the dictation.

‘This is the first time we are in Yekaterinburg, and it is very pleasant that we had an opportunity to take part in the Dictation. I realised that education is highly valued in Russia because everyone has the opportunity to test their knowledge. This event provides great opportunities for people, and it is wonderful,’ says Tang Jianning, Vice-Rector of Gandong Technical Institute.

Last year, 7,200 people wrote the Dictation in the Middle Urals. The organisers of the event, the Free Economic Society of Russia, expect about 10,000 Sverdlovsk residents to take part in the dictation this year. All participants will receive certificates, and those who have scored 90 points or more will receive a winner's diploma.
The Free Economic Society of Russia has been organising the All-Russian Economic Dictation since 2017. In 2023, 342,664 people from all corners of the Russian Federation, as well as residents of the CIS countries, Mongolia, Turkey, Syria and China took part in the action. Over 8 years, the number of participants has increased almost 6 times.
