Clean water is our goal

The meeting of the Eurasian Research Institute of Man took place at USUE. The theme of the meeting was "Water Resources of the Urals for Sustainable Development of the Region, Environmental Safety, and Public Health".

In many regions of Russia, there are pervasive problems with water supply due to uneven distribution and a high degree of water pollution, so the issue of the rational and efficient use of water resources is especially relevant.

The meeting was opened by Yevgeny Animitsa, the chair of the USUE Department of Regional and Municipal Economics and USUE chief adviser. During the meeting, it was noted that people deal with water not as the main resource of life support, but as an expandable material, that does not have strategic value for the state and people.

"All industrial waste is flown into the air, falls on the catchment and land in a water body, polluting it. We need to be more thoughtful and rational in this regard. We need a comprehensive approach to the environmental function of the state," said Alexander Popov, the head of the ROSNIIVH department on scientific and methodological support for the restoration and protection of water bodies.

Galina Pakhalchak, the chairperson of the Public Council at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of Sverdlovsk Oblast, added, "Today, water bodies are mainly polluted by housing and communal enterprises. 55% of pollutants in the water comes from utilities."

According to speakers, the quality of surface water in Sverdlovsk Oblast is deteriorating. "We do not have surface water of sufficient quality. Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Tagil, and Pervouralsk are under heavy load, taking into account the fact that there are no groundwater reserves either," commented Olga Getmanskaya, deputy head of the water resources department of the Nizhny-Obsky basin water management board in Sverdlovsk Oblast.

Following the meeting, the speakers noted that in order to increase the reliability and quality of water supply to the population, it is necessary to adjust the sanitary-epidemiological and hygienic requirements for such substances as arsenic, nickel, antimony, and lead; to revive the state expertise of fresh water supplies; to reduce the number of illegal wells by improving the licensing procedure; to introduce a systematic retraining of workers engaged in the operation of hydraulic facilities and at enterprises associated with water use.

After the meeting, the experts of IKA WERKE (Germany) demonstrated the mechanisms of processing living, dead (antibacterial), and antioxidant water by unique equipment, which has no analogs in Russia. The unique equipment will be installed at a laboratory of food genetics, the opening of which will be held in July. It will be included into the USUE Unified Laboratory Complex. The inhabitants of the city will have the opportunity to make an accurate analysis of water used in food and at home.
