They were just near to the Nobel Prize

The award ceremony of the finalists of the II regional contest "Female Image of Science" has finished at USUE.  The criteria for selecting winners in all nominations were the scientific successes of the nominees, the significance and usefulness of their research, as well as the desire to continue their scientific career in Russia. Deputy Minister of General and Professional Education of Sverdlovsk Oblast Yuri Zelenov made a welcoming speech, "I congratulate you on carrying out of such a beautiful event once again.  I would like to wish you many, many further contests, discoveries and victories.

" Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of Sverdlovsk Oblast Vladimir Vlasov noted the high importance of the event and the great contribution of women to the development of modern science, pointing out that today 70% of scientists were women.  "It is difficult to overestimate the contribution that women have made to the development of world science.  At the origins of many modern theories were representatives of the weaker sex. 

I hope that this contest would develop and attract more and more participants," Vladimir Vlasov commented.  This year, 215 girls and women under the age of 35 took part in the contest: students from schools and colleges, students and teachers of universities of Sverdlovsk Oblast, and young scientists from five academic institutes of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.  It is noteworthy that the event attracted attention of foreign students as well. The sphere of their professional interests and achievements are different.  One girl has developed a 3D skin bio-equivalent; the other is concerned with assessing the biological age of a person and how telomerase (the field of molecular genetics) influences its activity; in the power of the third one are mathematical methods in the geology of oil-and-gas bearing features; the fourth is an inventor by nature, whose contribution is noted by the World Intellectual Property Organization.

To choose the best of the best among two hundred intellectuals turned out to be an impossible task for the jury, that is why the organizers assigned 11 nominations: Grand Prix "Female Image of Science" (technical, natural, and humanitarian areas), "Best Mentor", "Business Lady in Science", "I'm not a Sorceress but Just an Apprentice...", "Mom in Science", "Scientific Youth”, “Lady-innovator”, “Public Recognition”, and “Woman International Science."We are glad to note that three scientists of Ural State University of Economics were among the finalists.  Svetlana Piankova won the nomination "Woman-strategist in Science". 

Svetlana Grigorievna takes an active part in the work of the Ural branch of the Free Economic Society of Russia, being a member of the board and presidium of this public organization, and teaches at the USUE Department of Regional and Municipal Economics and Management.  Her scientific papers are duly appreciated by the world expert community. Maria Markina won the nomination "Best Mentor": in December 2017 she successfully defended her thesis "Potentiometric and colorimetric sensors for determining antioxidant activity and human skin thiols", specialty - Analytical Chemistry. 

Currently, Maria Gennadyevna is engaged in teaching and continues to conduct scientific research being a junior research assistant at the USUE Scientific and Innovation Center of Sensory Technologies.  New methods developed by her have applied importance in dermatology and cosmetology. A 20-year-old student from China Sun Jun Fang with a project dedicated to the popularity of the Russian language in China won "Woman  International  Science" nomination.

The girl came to Yekaterinburg from the Institute of Foreign Languages of Shihezi University.  At USUE, she studies Russian and simultaneously masters the programs of the Department of International Business.      “The scientific success of the nominees, the importance and practical benefits of their scientific research, as well as the desire to continue their scientific career in Russia, became the criterion for selecting winners in all nominations," Olga Ergunova, an organizer of the contest "Female Image of Science ", said.
