Welcome to the Urals!

The forum “Welcome to the Urals!” has opened at Ural State University of Economics. The major topic is “National Policy of the Russian Federation”. 700 people, including USUE students, are taking part in the discussion of adaptation of foreigners in Russia.

“By uniting into one large community here in the Sverdlovsk region, we become stronger, enrich ourselves spiritually learning the culture, traditions, customs and languages of the peoples of the world. We strive to ensure that everyone who comes to us is imbued with our culture and the customs of the great multinational Russian people. Welcome to the Urals!” - USUE Rector Yakov Silin opened the forum.

In 2023, about 200 thousand migrants arrived in the Sverdlovsk region. The region is also popular among foreign citizens wishing to get higher education: last year, over 9,000 international students studied in Yekaterinburg. Therefore, the forum participants are sure there is a need for their social and cultural adaptation to life in Russia, given the differences in mentality and traditions. The Forum is attended by Ivan Paderin, Deputy Director of the Department of Domestic Policy of the Sverdlovsk region, head of the Department of Ethno-confessional Relations, Alexander Ivanov, Deputy Representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Yekaterinburg, Kirill Slizov, deputy head of the Immigration Control Department of the Directorate for Migration Affairs under the Russian MIA General Administration for the Sverdlovsk region, and Irina Salova, head of the Department of International and Foreign Economic Relations at the Yekaterinburg Administration.

Ivan Paderin noted that there are several factors in Russia that influence the geopolitical situation: “These are external challenges of an informational nature, when destructive associations try to influence us, dividing us along sensitive areas, such as interethnic and interreligious relations. It is now feared that some radical movements may turn into extremism.”

Alexander Ivanov, speaking to the forum participants, emphasized the importance of respect for other cultures and laws.

“We have profound respect for all nationalities and religions. We welcome everyone. The Russian people are very kind. However, never compare the concepts of weakness and kindness. If a foreign citizen follows the rules of respect for culture and law, he will never have problems in our country,” the government official summed up.

As the foreigners say, they feel an interest in Russia. They are interested in its history and culture. Today, as part of the forum, at the university, they opened an exhibition of portraits of students from Vietnam, Pakistan, Cameroon, and Morocco in Russian national costumes.

The forum will continue tomorrow, December 11. International students will be offered lectures and master-classes. The forum will end with a festival of Russian culture.

The project “Welcome to the Urals!” is being implemented by the regional fund for supporting initiatives of Eurasian youth with the partnership support of Ural State University of Economics. The project aims to study the problems of knowledge on the peculiarities of migration legislation, norms and rules of conduct of the host community.
