The main thing is to remain human!

Hero of the Russian Federation, Major Dmitry Vorobyov, visited Ural State University of Economics for the second time. The meeting was held as part of the patriotic project “Heroes Among Us”, and was also attended by USUE Rector Yakov Silin, Vice Rector for social work and youth policy Roman Krasnov and advisor to USUE Rector for patriotic education, Hero of the Russian Federation Sergei Voronin.

Dmitry Vorobyov started with telling the students about his family, where he was a third-generation officer.

“My father, grandfathers and great-grandfathers were all military men, and I could not fancy myself in any other profession. In 1992, I graduated from school in Tashkent and after the collapse of the USSR, I went to Russia to study further. In 1993, I entered the Omsk Military Command School and graduated as a motorized rifle platoon commander. And then, I continued my service in North Caucasus,” the USUE guest told.

During the military operations in Chechnya, Dmitry Vorobyov headed a reconnaissance group. In October 1999, his unit carried out a combat mission to capture a strategically important bridge across the Terek River near the village of Chervlennaya-Uzlovaya in the Shelkovsky district of the Chechen Republic. Dmitry Vorobyov’s group was discovered by militants, and they joined battle with superior enemy forces. Over the course of a day, the military repelled several militant attacks. At night, the situation became critical: ammunition was running low, and the enemy again launched an offensive. Then, Dmitry Vorobyov made a courageous decision to call an airstrike on himself. After a massive strike, he took advantage of the militants’ confusion and charged his fighters onto the enemy. That helped our military take the bridge and held it until reinforcements arrived.

On March 28, 2000, the decree of RF President awarded Dmitry Vorobyov the title Hero of the Russian Federation for his courage and heroism.

During the meeting, the officer gave advice to USUE students: “Always remain human. I have always said that the bitterest enemy is our own selves. Learn to fight with yourself. Do not do things you will be ashamed of. You are citizens of a great country!”

Today, Major Vorobyov lives in Volgograd and is involved in public activities, including holding many meetings with young people.

“When you grow older, you will tell your children: ‘What a hero you are!’ Where does this come from? From the family. As a child grows, he will absorb the best qualities because his parents and relatives place their hopes on him. This was the case in the life of Dmitry Aleksandrovich. He accomplished his feat,” USUE rector Yakov Silin noted during the meeting.

For nine years now, Ural State University of Economics has been carrying a unique project acquainting students with the heroes of their country. The project’s supervisor is Sergei Voronin, Hero of the Russian Federation, participant in the first and second Chechen campaigns.
