The number of trainees at the USUE Russian Language Center in Sri Lanka has increased. Currently, 25 people are taking classes at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and another 15 Sri Lankans will soon begin their studies. Recently, the heads and students of both universities met online.

“I would like to offer my special thanks for the successful opening of the Russian Language Center at your university, achieved through our collaborative work in such a short period. This is a sign of recognition, respect, and good intentions for long-term friendly relations,” USUE Rector Yakov Silin said.

The interest in the Russian language on the island is huge: every year more and more Russian tourists visit Sri Lanka. As TASS reports with reference to the authorities of the island state, Russia ranks second in the number of tourists. Since the beginning of the year, 29 thousand Russian citizens have visited Sri Lanka. One of the students of the Russian Language Center, 23-year-old Madushani Fernando, needs Russian for her profession: the girl works for an agency organizing tours to the island. Over the course of six months, she mastered the language so well that she decided to apply to a USUE master’s program.

“It is a great pleasure for me to study Russian. I have learned a lot of new and useful things during this time. I perceive learning Russian as an amazing journey that opens up great opportunities, including the chance to apply to a scholarship program for a master’s degree, and thank you for this,” Madushani said.

The joint work of Ural State University of Economics and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura began several years ago. In 2023, at the 13th Eurasian Economic Youth Forum, they signed a cooperation agreement. And just a year later, in September 2024, the USUE Russian Language Center started up in Sri Lanka. It was opened by USUE Vice-Rector for Social Work and Youth Policy Roman Krasnov.

“I am happy that our project of two universities is developing. We are exerting best efforts to ensure students from Sri Lanka receive high-quality education,” Roman Krasnov emphasized during the online meeting.

Classes for a new group of students at the USUE Russian Language Center in Sri Lanka will start on April 6.
