Remote employment with a hybrid schedule is optimal for combining work with raising children. 43% of Russians who took part in the USUE study think so. However, only 21% of the parents surveyed would like to switch to remote work.

The results of a joint project of the laboratory of the USUE Department of Labor Economics and Human Resources Management and the hh.ru research service have become known. The authors of the idea are Natalia Tonkikh, head of the USUE Employment Digitalization Research Laboratory, Tatyana Kamarova, associate professor of the USUE Department of Labor Economics and Human Resources Management, and Tatyana Markova, associate professor of the USUE Department of Business Foreign Language.

“Our team developed a questionnaire in which we offered parents questions on the time they spend for work and raising children, the format and schedule of their work, and satisfaction in their relationships with children, on what format is most suitable for combining work with the role of mom or dad, and what would they like to change. The questionnaire was placed on the online recruiting platform: it was proposed to be filled out to those who posted their resumes on the site,” Natalia Tonkikh said.

The survey was conducted from May 25 to June 4. 1,449 Russian applicants answered the questions. Of these, 56.2% are women and 43.8% are men. The majority (41%) occupy the position of a specialist, 26% - a manager, 8% of respondents called themselves employees. Workers, entrepreneurs and employees of service staff also took part in the survey.

In general, working Russians assess the ability to give their children enough time just for the “C grade” - at 6.3 points out of 10. Satisfaction with the overall quality of their parental duties is a bit higher - 6.6 points out of 10. Only one-fifth of the respondents gave the highest grade (10 points) to themselves as parents.

A third of respondents who have children said that parental duties on weekdays took them only two hours, another 36% - up to six hours, and 4% of respondents usually took care of children for over 7 hours a day. Another 10% of parents, most often men, do not take care of their children.

43% of respondents are sure that the optimal employment format for combining work and parenthood is remote working with a flexible schedule, when it is possible to independently adjust the start time, breaks, and end of work. 42% believe that it should be a hybrid format with a flexible schedule: partly remotely, partly at the employer’s premises, with the time of attendance at work being agreed upon. All other employment options, according to Russians, are much less suitable for moms and dads.

26% of Russians believe that to better fulfill their parental responsibilities, they need to switch to a hybrid work format, 21% would prefer remote work. 18% think the best way for them would be a flexible work schedule at the office (at the enterprise). 17% each are confident that they could become better parents if they reduce the number of overworks and shorten the hours of work.. 15% are sure that it is necessary to reduce the number of working days per week. 13% see only a cardinal decision - to change occupation. At the same time, 22% of respondents believe nothing needs to be changed.
