I have an idea!

A USUE student won the “Best Question for the 2025 All-Russia Economic Dictation” contest. Stepan Bedrin proposed a question about the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics.

The question from a USUE third-year student was: “In 2024, the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James Robinson for their research of societal institutions and their impact on national prosperity. Which societal institutions, as identified by the authors, are conducive to economic growth?

Stepan Bedrin admits he spent 15 minutes pondering the question: “At home, I came across a book by these authors, and the idea immediately came to me. I spent the rest of that time clarifying the wording and citing the bibliographic reference according to GOST. I was tremendously surprised that they would use my question in the dictation."

In 2025, over 340 questions were submitted to the contest. A panel of experts selected the top three and included them in this year’s dictation. The awards ceremony for the contest’s winners will take place as part of the All-Russia Economic Assembly, dedicated to the 260th anniversary of the Free Economic Society of Russia and the professional holiday Economist’s Day.

The 9th national educational event, All-Russia Economic Dictation, took place on October 14. Participants from all regions of Russia and several foreign countries tested their economic literacy. This year, Ural State University of Economics attracted over 14,500 participants.
