How to save a sufferer

A presentation of the unique device "AND-15" was held at USUE. The automatic external defibrillator is intended for defibrillation of patients with sudden cardiac arrest while medical and pre-medical care, as well as for public and home use. The device was developed at the Urals Optical and Mechanical Plant named after E.S. Yalamov.

According to the speakers, a sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, and anytime. "300,000 Russian citizens are exposed to sudden cardiac arrest every year. At the same time, there are only 6-10 minutes to save a sufferer. In this case, this device might help as it is designed for first aid at a sudden cardiac arrest in crowded places," said Pavel Lyzhin, head of the Representative Office of Rostec Corporation in Sverdlovsk Oblast.

A compact and light device weighing 2.65 kg is simple and convenient in use. All its actions are accompanied by voice commands. The constant heart rate analysis protects against misuse. "Your task is to attach the electrodes as shown in the picture. Then, the defibrillator will tell you what to do. If the heart rate is normal, there will be no discharge. The risk of an accidental discharge is zero. This is confirmed by many years of research," said Andrei Novitsky, Deputy General Director of AO "UOMZ".

A cardiologist at the Ural Institute of Cardiology Valery Vasiliev confirmed the importance of the invention for saving lives of people. However, he noted, "Despite the easy use of the device, it is necessary to train people in the methods of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in combination with AND: indirect cardiac massage and artificial respiration." According to the doctor, this will increase the chances of rescuing a sufferer.

USUE rector Yakov Silin noted that the device is necessary for all educational institutions. "We have a large number of staff and students at the University. Unfortunately, any unforeseen emergencies can occur. We would like to save lives for our employees and students, so we intend to purchase this apparatus for the University," the rector said.
