When there is both strength and mind!

The team of Ural State University of Economics took third place in the armwrestling tournament, which was held in Izhevsk (Udmurtia) as part of the II All-Russian Student Games of National and Non-Olympic Sports.

For the first time, USUE arm wrestlers won a prize in the team standings at national competitions. This victory is also valuable because the athletes had almost no time to prepare: students had holidays.

As Olga Fedotova, the coach of the USUE strength sport team, said, from the moment of applying to the start of the tournament, the athletes had a little more than a week to prepare: “We had just a couple of training sessions. The guys, of course, are not beginners. They are members of the USUE strength sport team, but competitions in a particular sport require special serious training. We could not even dream of a prize-winning place in the national level competition! When the results were announced, when they said that USUE students left behind St. Petersburg and Moscow athletes who had been professionally engaged in armwrestling for several years, I was happy! My guys did almost impossible!.”

Over 400 athletes from eight regions of Russia took part in the II All-Russian Student Games of National and Non-Olympic Sports. Students competed in armwrestling, cross-country biathlon, tug of war, short football 3x3, and orienteering. Teams from 28 Russian universities competed in armwrestling. The USUE team included 4 students: three boys and a girl. All young men took prize-winning places in individual events.

Sergei Nourislamov, a first-year master’s student, took second place in the double event in the category “men weighing over 90 kg”. Sergei joined the University’s strength sport team while still a USUE bachelor’s student. He is engaged in powerlifting, and took part in armwrestling competitions for the first time. And in the final, he defeated a student of one of the Moscow universities, a master of sports in arm wrestling.

Gleb Zubkov, a second- year student of the Institute of Digital Technologies and Information Security, received a bronze medal among youths weighing up to 90 kg. Semyon Zhukov, a third-year student of the Institute of Digital Technologies and Information Security, was the second in the category “men weighing up to 80 kg”. The only girl in the team, a fourth- year student of the USUE Institute of Public Administration and Law, Veronika Kostousova, won fifth place in the category “women weighing up to 65 kg”. As in armwrestling points are given to a team for a personal victory of participants up to 6th place, Veronika also contributed to the team win.
