Control and incentives — how to develop research?

A first-year master’s student at the USUE Institute of Master’s Studies became a laureate of the All-Russian Research-to-Practice Conference of Schoolchildren and Students named after Zhores Alferov.

From November 4 to 6, Russia — My History museum and exhibition complex hosted the conference working in twelve sections on 87 topics. The conference brought together over 600 face-to-face participants. Twenty young researchers reached the second live stage in the Exact Sciences area. And only two received first- and third- class laureate diplomas. One of them is Elizaveta Sokolova, a master student and specialist at the USUE Office of Scientometrics, Research and Ratings.

Together with her scientific adviser, Svetlana Begicheva, she studied the work of the university teachers and staff to make the most objective assessment of research activity.

“The assessment of an employee’s performance is always a controversial issue,” Lisa thinks. “I tried to find the most active teachers who are developing in relation to their own achievements of the past years. After all, you can’t just take quantitative indicators and exclude other factors. Some experts, heads of departments and directors of institutes, themselves face the need to control and stimulate research. They noted the actual outcome of the research and the similarity to the situation at their universities.”

Liza expressed her hope that in the future, the results of her research would help university administrations to make scientifically well-grounded managerial decisions and improve the scientific process.
