Leya was one of the youngest participants in the championship. She started from the 1/64 finals and won a brilliant victory first over the international master from Mexico Zenia Corrales Jimenez and then - over one of the leading Russian chess players Olga Girya.

In the 1/16 finals, in a highly contested match, Leya Garifullina succumbed to the vice-champion of Russia Polina Shuvalova. “I think Leya played very well. She was, perhaps, the youngest participant in the world largest women's chess forum. She steadily passed through two rounds of the tournament. She entered the list of 32 best chess players - this is a great success,” commented grandmaster Andrey Shariyazdanov, Leya's mentor, the best children's coach-2020 in Russia.

Last year, Leya Garifullina won the Higher League of the Russian Women's Chess Championship, which was also held in Sochi. At Ural State University of Economics, Leya received a Certificate of Merit from the Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region and was awarded the title of Master of Sports of Russia.

“Our University provides all the opportunities for development, but when a person at such a young age has already achieved such great results in sports, it is important to support him or her on this track. When there is a master, a coach, and a powerful chess federation, it means there is a system and there is a school," USUE rector Yakov Silin stated.
