Lead the way on science

USUE scientists have won the regional grant competition of the Russian Science Foundation held jointly with the Government of the Sverdlovsk region.

The Russian Science Foundation has announced the results of a competition for foundation grants in the priority area “Conducting Fundamental Scientific Research and Exploratory Scientific Research by Small Individual Research Groups,” held jointly with the Government of the Sverdlovsk region

The competition aims to support and develop research teams that occupy leading positions in specific fields of science:

  • Mathematics, Computer and Systems Sciences
  • Physics and Space Sciences
  • Chemistry and Materials Science
  • Biology and Life Sciences
  • Basic Research for Medicine
  • Agricultural Sciences
  • Earth Sciences
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Engineering Sciences

In the Chemistry and Materials Science field, a grant for fundamental research was awarded to the USUE research team led by Maria Bukharinova, PhD in Chemistry and Associate Professor at the USUE Department of Physics and Chemistry. The team won with the project “Enzyme-Free Electrochemical Sensors Based on Modified Phytosynthesized Carbon Veil Nanocatalysts for Highly Sensitive and Rapid Detection of Pesticide Residues in Agricultural Products.”

The project aims to create enzyme-free electrochemical sensors based on electrodes made of carbon veils modified with phytosynthesized nanocatalysts for highly sensitive and rapid detection of pesticides. The relevance of this research for the Ural region stems from the urgent need for rapid monitoring of pesticides in agricultural raw materials and food products to protect public health.

The USUE project members were Natalia Stozhko, Dr. of Chemical Sciences and head of the USUE Department of Physics and Chemistry; Ekaterina Khamzina, PhD in Chemical Sciences and engineer at the USUE Department of Physics and Chemistry; and Veronika Koltygina, a USUE postgraduate student and laboratory assistant at the USUE Research and Educational Center. The scientists note that the project will take two years (2026-2027) to implement and will receive 1.5 million rubles in annual funding.

We congratulate the research team and wish them further scientific success!
