On the eve of the Victory Day, we are starting to publish a series of materials telling about the exploits of the teachers of our university during the Great Patriotic War.

On May 9, our country will celebrate the 78th anniversary of the Victory. Each family will remember the participants and heroes who, through their feats of arms and labor, contributed immeasurably to the Great Victory. Among the many heroes, there were 60 people - future teachers and employees of SINKH (now USUE). Among these veterans were six women - participants in battles.

Our veterans fought in almost all branches of the armed forces and took part in all major battles and operations: these are the defense of Moscow, the Caucasus and Kiev, the lifting of the Siege of Leningrad, the defense of the Northern Arctic, Odessa and Sevastopol, the Battle of Stalingrad and Kursk, the liberation of Belarus and the Baltic states, Prague, Warsaw, Vienna, Budapest and Belgrade, the capture of Königsberg and Berlin. Seven people later took part in the Soviet-Japanese war in the Far East in 1945.

Four employees survived the horror of the Nazi concentration camps, two - the Leningrad Blockade. The list of state awards of veterans - employees and teachers of the university- is also impressive: 26 persons were awarded the Order of the Red Star; 6 persons - the Order of the Patriotic War 1st class, and 7 persons - the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class, 2 persons - the Order of the Red Banner and 1 person - the Order of Glory third class.

32 people were decorated with the medal “For Battle Merit”, 9 people - “For Courage”, 4 veterans received medals “For the Capture of Königsberg” and “For the Capture of Berlin.” Three veterans became holders of the medals “For the Defense of Leningrad”, “For the Defense of the Caucasus”, “For the Defense of Stalingrad.” Two participants in the Great Patriotic War were awarded medals “For the Defense of Kiev”, “For the Defense of Moscow”, “For the Defense of the Soviet Transarctic”, “For the Liberation of Warsaw”, “For the Liberation of Prague” and “For the Capture of Budapest.” Among the awarded USUE veterans, one person was decorated with the medal “For the Capture of Vienna” and one - “For the Liberation of Belgrade”. One participant in the war was awarded the medals “For the Defense of Odessa” and “For the Defense of Sevastopol”. Seven people were presented with the medals “For the Victory over Japan.”

The greatness of the feat of arms on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War can only be compared with the selfless work of home front workers. 31 people (12 of them women), future employees of our university, made a significant contribution to the common Victory: they operated machines, worked on collective farm fields and in hospitals, giving the front everything it needed: weapons, clothing, and food.

We remember the glorious defenders of the Motherland who fought for their native land, we are proud of the courage, heroism, stamina of soldiers and officers, and the selflessness of home front workers!
