Don't be afraid of competition

The University Shifts are in progress at USUE for the third day. Today, teenagers from Zaporozhye met with the head of Yekaterinburg, Alexey Orlov.

14 schoolchildren taking part in the University Shifts at USUE visited one of the most recognizable architectural monuments of regional significance - the Yekaterinburg city hall.

“The situation in your region is not easy today. We want to support you and give you the opportunity to better know the country where you now live. As evidenced in practice, young people who participated in previous shifts in Yekaterinburg return to our city, enter local educational institutions, and receive an education here. We are always happy to welcome young people. Therefore, we strive to make our city convenient and attractive for young people,” Yekaterinburg mayor Alexey Orlov said.

The USUE Vice-Rector for Social Work and Youth Policy, Roman Krasnov also welcomed the participants: “We are very glad of your arrival. We have prepared an eventful program for you. Our program includes trips both around Yekaterinburg and to other equally important cities of the Sverdlovsk region. We are sure you will spend your time here nice and profitably.”

The guys who came from the Zaporozhye region did not miss the opportunity to ask questions to the head of one of the largest cities in Russia. For example, how Alexey Orlov became a mayor, where he received his education, what sports he does, what places in Yekaterinburg he recommends visiting. The schoolchildren were also interested in how to forge one’s own path, whether it is difficult to manage a city with a population of a million. The mayor did not avoid the answers.

“It’s all about sports. It occupies an important place in my life. Since my youth, I’ve been into track and field, and now I start my morning with swimming five times a week. Besides, you need a good night’s sleep, at least seven hours. The job of the mayor is a multitasking one, and it requires concentration,” Alexey Orlov explained.

Finally, the Yekaterinburg mayor gave the schoolchildren advice: “A leader should not be afraid to surround himself with smart people. There is no need to be afraid of competition. Only with its help you can achieve top results. You will do fine!”

After the meeting, the children went on a tour of the city hall, and then, at Ural State University of Economics, they attended master classes given by USUE teachers. The schoolchildren learned what crowd economics is and learned how to make the Schorle royal drink.

For the second time, USUE has become a platform for the federal educational project University Shifts in the Sverdlovsk region. In total, over 90 universities from 8 regions joined the project in 2024. The University Shifts project is held for children from new constituent entities of the Russian Federation, the Belgorod region, children from the families of participants in the special military operation, as well as those who passed the competitive selection of the Movement of the First. They have planned seven shifts for this season. This year, the organizers of the project were the Ministry of Education of Russia together with the national Movement of the First.
