«Fiery River»: in Yekaterinburg, thousands of people lit a «candle of memory»

On the night of June 22 in the center of Yekaterinburg, thousands of candles were lit. The annual action in honor of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War was supported by public organizations, university students, and top officials of the region.

«There comes a sacred day. It was really a feat, unequaled anywhere in the world. And the Urals took part in it. A half of the industrial output that went to the front was manufactured here. We received hospitals. The treasures of the Hermitage were sent to our city. A lot of things happened here in those years. And very many people did not return from the front. Lest we forget those who forged Victory,» welcomed the audience Deputy Governor of the Sverdlovsk region Pavel Krekov.

The participants of the International Action began to gather near Sevastyanov’s House long before the start of the commemorative procession. In all, about 5,000 Uralians took part in the sorrowful event. With the candles in their hands, the column passed along the central street of Yekaterinburg, resembling a wide and long fiery river. Having stopped at the Square of 1905, people lined up in the word «Remember».

«People come here after work, tired. But I think all this fatigue on their faces cannot be compared with what our ancestors experienced,» a USUE student Aleksey Machalin shared his impressions with us.

During a minute of silence, the Uralians raised their candles. They were not only symbols of sorrow but also of hope. Hope for peace. The candles over the heads united such different people concerned with the tragedy of their country.

For the years of the Great Patriotic War, 700 thousand people of the Urals were off to the front. Almost half the soldiers fell on the battlefields. For each of them, as well as for those who survived and returned, the «candles of memory» burned until midnight on June 22.
