ONLINE TRAINING THROUGH THE EYES OF TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

After the holidays, USUE has resumed remote training. In accordance with the order of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, on April 6, teachers and students of all forms of bachelor’s and master’s studies began online classes.

We asked both teachers and students how the first week of training had passed and whether they managed to switch to a new format of interaction.

On April 6, exams began at the Master’s Courses Institute. As the director of the Institute  Natalia Verbitskaya assured, the training took place as normal and in accordance with the schedule. “We are preparing for the next exam session, which starts on May 2. Today, the Ministry of Science and Education of the Russian Federation is conducting a webinar where it gives recommendations on the defending of graduation theses, which this year will also be held online”. Natalia Verbitskaya gives lectures to master's students using a home laptop, and notes the interesting dynamics of attendance growth: “Our students are usually adults, working people. If not everyone was able to come to the lecture in person, their remote attendance increased significantly,” she says.

The chair of the Department of Public Law Denis Goncharov mentioned that among other electronic resources portals, Microsoft Teams, through which he teaches, was the most stable. “Students establish connections from various devices at their disposal, someone does not have a video camera, someone does not have a microphone,” he detailed. – “Therefore, as a rule, students do not watch, but listen to a lecture and write questions or answer in a chat”. He also added that students do not sit idle while on distance learning: they participate in seminars, pass tests.

“The format of distance training is familiar to me. My online experience is already ten years old!” Andrei Plakhin, the acting chair of the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship said. “Online learning is a steady trend that has been observed in the education system over the past few years. Dynamic modern life and globalization of education determine the need for teachers and students to adapt to electronic and distance educational technologies. Thanks to technology, it is possible, being at the workplace or on the road, using a laptop or any other gadget, to be always in touch and in close contact.” Andrei Plakhin is sure that the future in education is with digital technologies, which will make it possible not only to create a teaching and methodological base, but also to verify a student based on Face ID, digital electronic signature, and other technologies. “I think that every advanced person has been on the subject and followed this trend,” he said.

Of course, not all students are happy with distance education; everyone is used to live communication. Some complain that they have more homework and that they have to learn a lot on their own, which not everyone is ready for. Others note that some teachers do not sufficiently explain the tasks in cover letters, which results in misunderstanding and many additional questions.

Oksana, the Institute of Economics: “It’s very inconvenient to track the deadline for submitting all review works by oneself.  It would be better at least to receive a notification to e-mail. “As there are many disciplines, there are even more review works, I fail to do it in time!”

Lera, the Institute of Economics: “I do cope, but I spend a lot of time to understand the learning material.  I have to study a lot by myself, and because of this it is difficult to do home assignments.”

Anastasia, a Public and Municipal Management student: “For me, the main drawback of online studies is a bad Internet connection, because of this, the seminar time is reduced and less time is left to complete the task

As regards technical problems, they are undoubtedly being resolved and thereafter they will disappear. We will gain experience of remote communication. Teachers will switch to a new format of teaching, and students will self-organize.
