The USUE House of Culture hosted the international song contest in foreign languages “Songs of the World-2024”. Students showed off both their vocal skills, and their knowledge of English, French, Chinese and Spanish.

The competition was organized by the USUE Department of Foreign Languages.

“One way to remember more words in a foreign language that you are learning is to read books and listen to songs in the original. It turns out to be two-in-one: both familiarization with the culture and development of lexical, grammatical, phonetic, and communicative competences. This is how the idea of holding a competition among students was born,” Natalia Saulich, a USUE teacher, said.

The students enjoyed the invitation to take part in the competition. They chose a repertoire and costumes and presented 19 rousing items on the stage of the USUE House of Culture. For example, a USUE student (MM-21 group) Maria Bakhtiyarova performed the song Tusa in Spanish:“It is very difficult both to perform a song in a language you are still learning and to walk out on stage. Trying your hand is a great success. Performing a composition by your favorite artist is doubly lucky. I hope that the competition will become a wonderful tradition at the university.”

The competition also featured compositions in English, French and Chinese. The teachers supported their students and sang along with them.

The performance of the USUE student from Angola left a great impression. Marta Maliti David Violeta performed the song Hope in Russian to show the beauty of the language.

Apart from USUE students, students from the Bender Higher Art College named after V.I. Postoykin (Transdniestria) took part in the competition. They sent a video of four songs in English.

The teachers of the USUE Department of Foreign Languages rated the competition items according to the following criteria: pronunciation, intonation, knowledge of the text, artistry, and creativity. Based on the results of all the performances, the prize places were distributed as follows:

First place diploma:

Elena Telminova (group MM-21), with the song My Heart Will Go On in English.

Second place diploma:

Nurai Agababaeva, Ivan Belousov, Andrey Neganov, Ivan Samoilov (groups MM-21 and IM-21), with the song Champs-Élysées in French;

Third place diploma:

Marta Maliti David Violeta (group EK-24-3), with the song Hope in Russian;
