PANDEMIC CONSEQUENCES: HOW WILL TOURISM INDUSTRY COPE WITH CORONACRISIS THROUGH DIGITALIZATION?

On the eve of World Tourism Day, Ural State University of Economics hosted a roundtable "The impact of digital economy on the development of the tourism, service and hospitality industry."

At the roundtable meeting, participants from Peru, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, Chuvashia, St. Petersburg, Tyumen, and Yekaterinburg noted that thanks to the development of digital economy and digital platforms, the tourism, service and hospitality industry would be able to recover faster after the coronavirus pandemic and the long closure of international borders.

The moderator of the event, the head of the USUE  Department of Tourism Business and Hospitality, Olga Ergunova emphasized:

“Among classical travel agencies, only those will survive who, over the years, have managed to create a loyal customer base, for whom live communication with an expert remains an important element of travel arranging. Travel managers should be equipped with competitive offerings, which means leveraging global digital resource platforms. The most in-demand in the future will be tech companies able to provide booking of travel services and corresponding mutual settlements”.

At the end of the roundtable, they awarded the winners of the competition of youth videos "World Is the Territory of Tourism." More than 100 applications for the competition were received from undergraduates and Master’s students of colleges and universities and young people under 25 years of age with no academic degree from research institutes and other interested organizations. Foreign students from Peru, Bulgaria, and Kazakhstan showed a keen interest in the competition. In the videos, the contestants reflected their attitude to tourism and its main elements: hotel and restaurant activities, and newsworthy events. The most impressive in the videos were the presented tourist trails of foreign countries and Russia.

The tourism potential of each country is truly enormous, that is why it is so important to develop the tourism, service and hospitality industry.
