Russian language - a bridge to South Asia

A delegation from Sri Lanka visited USUE. Ambassador of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Mr. Paker Mohideen Amza, and university rector Yakov Silin discussed some issues of cooperation in education.

USUE Rector Yakov Silin, welcoming the guests, expressed hope for fruitful cooperation: “We have to develop joint projects, organize the exchange of students and teachers, establish interaction between countries in scientific research, and ensure participation in conferences.”

Last year, the university and the island state signed an agreement to open a Russian Language Center at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. This Center will help future students prepare for studying at Russian universities, as well as those who want to connect their lives with Russia. A certificate of training at the Center will allow Sri Lankans to enter any Russian university and receive an education in any area.

Ambassador Paker Mohideen Amza noted the importance of building cooperation with Ural State University of Economics for the Republic of Sri Lanka: “We would like to continue the endeavors of our predecessors and strengthen our cooperation in education. In the modern world, it is very important to learn languages. The establishment of the Russian Language Center at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura will be another important step towards our fruitful cooperation.”

The diplomat emphasized that the Russian language was important for the citizens of Sri Lanka, since the tourist flow from the Russian Federation was increasing every year. At the Center, the teachers not only teach Russian, they introduce foreigners to the culture, traditions and history of Russia. Such knowledge helps in establishing contacts and improving the quality of service for tourists on the island. Tourism revenue accounts for 9% of Sri Lanka’s GDP.

During the meeting, USUE rector Yakov Silin, through officials of the diplomatic mission of Sri Lanka in Russia, invited scientists from higher educational institutions of the island state to join the scientific projects of Ural State University of Economics.
