Russian language will sound in Africa

USUE held an online meeting with the University of Pretoria (South Africa) on creating a Russian Language Center in Africa. The USUE Vice-Rector for Social Work and Youth Policy, Roman Krasnov, discussed the details of the large-scale project with the UP Vice-Principal for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Education, Professor Sunil Maharaj.

The Russian Language Center will contribute to developing cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Africa.

“Today, students from 29 countries of the African continent study at Ural State University of Economics. The opening of the center will help applicants learn the Russian language without leaving their homeland, and get acquainted with the history and traditions of our country even before admission,” Roman Krasnov emphasized.

The Russian Language Center project involves the opening of a specialized educational site at the University of Pretoria. USUE will send teachers to the Republic of South Africa, as well as all the necessary teaching aids and resource books. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a certificate enabling them to enter any higher educational institution within the Russian Federation. The project is already being implemented in Egypt, and educational site in Sri Lanka will start operating in the very near future.

During the negotiations, African partners expressed interest in implementing the project. The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Sandy Africa, noted that today students at the University of Pretoria study German, French, and Spanish. Learning Russian will give them a great advantage over their competitors.

Both countries are interested in developing cooperation in education at the highest level. Words of support for the opening of the Russian Language Center were offered by the Honorary Consul of South Africa in Yekaterinburg, Sergei Mazurkevich. In March, USUE Rector Yakov Silin will meet in Moscow with the South African Ambassador to Russia for a detailed discussion of this large-scale project.

Vice-Rector for Social Work and Youth Policy, Roman Krasnov, suggested African partners to continue the dialogue in a face-to-face format and invited the UP delegation to take part in the XIV Eurasian Economic Youth Forum to be held in Yekaterinburg from April 22 to 26.
