Triumph!

On October 26 and 27, Pervouralsk hosted the Sverdlovsk region men’s and women’s rapid chess championship. The winner of the tournament was the FIDE Master, a USUE first-year student, Roman Kuzmin. Our student did not lose a single round.

The participants of the championship had to play 9 rounds, each of 10 minutes plus  5 additional seconds given per move. Roman Kuzmin beat the Asian Chess Junior Champion Alexey Prokhorov, having scored 9 maximum points. His opponent got 7 points.

“This time I expected to podium finish, though I was not sure about 1st place. The tournament was quite easy, I felt I was superior to my opponents in the game,” Roman Kuzmin says.

The USUE student has been actively participating in chess games for 12 years to keep fit. One of his last competitions was the All-Russian Student Chess Tournament, which took place in Moscow. Then, USUE took 15th place in the team standings. Roman considers the Russian Junior Championship under 17 to be one of his most significant wins. Now, he is a first-year student at the Institute of Digital Management Technologies and Information Security. He plans to connect his life with business.

Soon, the student will go to the Men’s Chess Championship of the Ural Federal District, which will be held in November in Chelyabinsk. The chess player is being trained for the competition by the coach of the USUE chess team, Grigory Gusarov: “I expected our student to be among the prize winners of the regional championship, but the absolute result was a pleasant surprise. There were three or four of his major competitors, however our student turned out to be stronger.”

A total of 61 chess players from Yekaterinburg, Aramil, Nizhny Tagil, Verkhnyaya Pyshma, Revda, Krasnoturinsk, Pervouralsk, Verkhnyaya Salda, and Bilimbay settlement took part in the tournament.
