Roundtable Modern Trends in HRM Development: Myths or Reality

Roundtable "Modern Trends in HRM Development:  Myths or Reality"
March 28, the Department of Labor Economics and HR Management jointly with the Office for USUE Human Resources and the Association of HR Managers and Specialists organized and held a roundtable on the current trends in personnel management.

The event was attended by the heads of personnel services of Sverdlovsk Oblast enterprises, lecturers and students of USUE and UrFU, Mauro  Gatti, professor of Sapienza University of Rome, and master’s students from Mexico.

During the roundtable, the participants discussed global trends in HRM (human  resources  management).  HRM is a system for managing human resources, which aims to ensure that an organization has high-quality personnel capable of performing its assigned labor functions.

The topic discussed at the event was supported by the USUE rector Yakov Silin.  He noted that it is at such roundtables where diffusion of knowledge occurs.  "Any trends are actualized in the minds of people, so it is very important to understand that it is students who will work in new conditions, and they have quite different views and requirements,” he stressed.

The key academic speaker was the Italian guest who said that changes in global economy and the growth of technological opportunities led to constant changes in the field of personnel management.  Among the key changes, the professor noted the digitalization of the society. "We must understand how the labor market is changing.  Digital technologies are becoming a driving force in HR,” Mauro Gatti says.

According to the professor, the main trend in the field of personnel management is adaptability in a changing social environment, "I am sure that it is those firms that can quickly respond to requests in new competencies, will be the most flexible and adaptive in the labor market.  It will be those companies that will be able to internalize the "flexibility gene" in their corporate cultures.”

Alternative points of view were also presented. Ruslan Dolzhenko, chair of the Department of Labor Economics and HR Management, focused attention on the fact that some of the trends that are spoken about in media are just fiction, no more than fancy topics designated by consulting companies to sell their products to business.  "The true trend in terms of science is characterized by a quantification that implies the changing of indicators, and therefore what we call HR-trends are not as such," the scientist noted.

The analysis carried out by him made it possible to identify two trends in the area under study that meet these criteria: 1. The number of articles on HR trends increases every year. 2. The level of labor productivity in the Russian Federation is declining.  "That is why practitioners and scientists in the field of labor economics and human resources management should think about those real tools that would increase labor productivity in the foreseeable future," he concluded.

The participants of the event discussed the development and popularity of certain trends in the field of personnel management, which will facilitate the life of many companies and their employees.  Andrey Tukh, a Sberbank official, made a point in this respect.  He confirmed the importance and significance of the trends and noted that at present, there appeared a profession related to the analysis of key trends but the most important thing that HR managers should remember was  the vitality of products that are created by a company, including those for internal customers.  "Sometimes an employee cannot install a new application of the company on his phone because he does not have enough space on it, which he would prefer to use to save a photo of a close person," the Sberbank expert noted.

At the end of the discussion, Mauro Gatti presented his authorial program of the summer school for HR specialists "New Trends and Technologies of HR Management", which is planned for July 2018 with training at Sapienza  University  of  Rome, including an internship in leading HR-services of Italian enterprises.  The partners in the implementation of this program will be the USUE Department of Labor Economics and HR Management, and Association of HR Managers and Specialists.
