World Quality Day at USUE

As part of the events timed to the World Quality Day, today Ural State University of Economics hosted an expert examination and consumer evaluation of cheeses of Russian producers. The experts were employees of the USUE Common Laboratory Complex and consumer evaluation was done by students and staff of the University.

The expert review was conducted at the modern high-precision equipment of the USUE Common Laboratory Complex: spectrometer and Rossa 1101 instrument. The experts noted that there are no similar devices for product investigation in any Yekaterinburg laboratory. Alexander Shvetsov, the author of Rossa 1101, participated in the study of the quality of Russian cheeses.

Head of the laboratory of certification testing of consumer goods at the USUE Common Laboratory Complex Galina Sharafutdinova told about the ongoing research, «World Quality Day is celebrated at our University for ten years. Today we took domestic cheeses for the expertise. The sanctions have limited the market, and we want to show that domestic producers of cheeses have only benefited from this. The product line became more diverse, there appeared products for people with a variety of taste preferences. There are soft and hard cheeses, and stinky cheeses.»

Director of the USUE Common Laboratory Complex Natalia Kolberg told in detail about the equipment, by which the expertise was done, «Today, Ural State University of Economics has the opportunity to identify and detect the falsification of foodstuffs. Proudly I can say that in the Laboratory Complex we have the equipment that is not presented anywhere else in Yekaterinburg. We are monopolists because to date Rossa-1101 is being tested in our laboratory. With the use of this instrument we determine a redox balance, pH, and temperature of food — all in real-time with an accuracy of nanounits. Besides, the study is carried out on a spectrometer. The equipment was purchased this year and there is also no equivalent equipment in the city. Thanks to these instruments, it can be said with 100% accuracy whether a sample belongs to a group of cheeses or is a counterfeit. From a number of the range of cheeses we chose the samples that the buyer liked. We checked their quality. The second stage is to investigate those cheeses that the buyer did not like. The duration of the procedure is from 2 to 10 minutes. In such a way, we can analyze any product.»

Natalia Kolberg also spoke about the work being done in the lab, «The University administration has set a task to develop and implement laboratory complex that meets modern requirements. We can determine falsification of food products and develop methods for functional nutrition of the population of different groups (children, adults, diseases of different groups). To develop a methodology, we need to know the quality of the product. First, we look at the biological composition of a product and on its safety. We investigate how much the product meets GOST quality and requirements of today.»

After laboratory tests, students and faculty of the University had to choose the best product from their point of view. Before tasting, all the participants were welcomed by USUE Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Sergei Rogozhin, by the head of the Rosstandart Territorial Department Svetlana Mikheeva, and head of the Department of Quality Control Lyudmila Protasova.

Sergei Rogozhin in his address to the students stressed the importance of professions they had chosen, «Together with the world community, we need to think what our lives should be in the future, what it must comply with, and how to make it be decent.»

Svetlana Mikheeva urged students to actively and fruitfully receive knowledge, «Today, the quality determines the future. Knowledge in the field of the quality that you receive is very important, including in the international arena. I wish you success in mastering the specialty and your future profession».

As part of the Quality Day there was organized a roundtable «The quality and innovation of the 21st century», where USUE students made reports along with professionals in the field of quality. The roundtable was attended by the head of the Rosstandart territorial department Svetlana Mikheeva, a quality engineer at TPK-Ostrov Irina Shilkova, and head of conformity evaluation department at Uraltest Yevgeny Sysuev. The participants discussed the essence of the «quality» concept, the organizing of expert and consumer assessments, and other issues.

The Quality Day finished with a workshop and training «Methods of Quality Management in Recruitment» delivered by Julia Degtyareva, a training manager of Competence Development Center, Personnel Department, MEGAMART- Dixy Group, and business game «Quality and Innovation for All.»
