Representatives of Guangdong Institute of Technology and Harbin Institute of Petroleum met with the leadership of Ural State University of Economics and gave a look-over to its classrooms. The delegation of Chinese universities included vice-rectors, heads of educational and training departments, and teachers of various specialties, from art design to accounting.

“Dear colleagues, I am glad to welcome you to Ural State University of Economics. I would like to note that I have been to China many times, including Harbin. In Guangzhou,  22 years ago, I signed a sister-cities arrangement as a Yekaterinburg public officer. Since then, our cities became twinned,” USUE Rector Yakov Silin addressed Chinese colleagues.

Professor Silin told the guests from China about the history of USUE, where over 16 thousand students are currently studying, including 110 students from China.

“Chinese students are hardworking, very conscientious, and well-organized,” these are the words Yakov Silin used to describe the Chinese students who are currently mastering USUE bachelor’s and master’s programs, and studying at postgraduate school and preparatory faculty.

The main areas of training at Ural State University of Economics - economics, jurisprudence, information technologies, business informatics - became the subject of discussion with the Chinese delegation.

“Our institute is training 35 thousand students, and cooperation with leading Russian universities is extremely important for us. We are interested not only in the areas of training for bachelor’s and master’s degrees, but also in our teachers getting doctorate degrees in Russia,” said Vice-Rector of the Guangdong Institute of Technology, Tang Jianning, sharing plans for cooperation with USUE.

Chinese scientists noted that the desire of students from China to study in Russia is increasing every year. The most interesting for them today are the “4+2” program (4 years of bachelor’s degree studies at a Chinese university + master’s degree studies in Russia) and the admission of Chinese students to bachelor’s degree courses at Russian universities after preliminary training in China, including the Russian language. Besides, student exchange programs are in great demand in China, thanks to which Russian and Chinese students get better acquainted with the history and cultural traditions of both countries.

According to USUE Rector, we also see a growing interest in China, including the Chinese language. Today, the Chinese language is second only to English in the number of students learning it at our university.

Cooperation between Chinese and Russian universities will bear fruit in the coming years, not only in education, but, as a result, in research, development of industry and trade between the two countries, as the meeting participants noted.

“We cooperate with over 40 foreign universities, over 30 of which are Russian universities. We have sent over a thousand students to study in Russia and wish to continue working in this direction. We are interested in economics, management, and informatization in the economic sphere,” emphasized Vice-Rector of Harbin Institute of Petroleum Tong Yu.

USUE Vice-Rector for Research, Viktor Kovalev, told the Chinese guests about options for scientific cooperation including the implementation of joint scientific projects, the creation of joint scientific teams, and the prospects for this work, which aroused great interest among the representatives of the PRC.

“Just as the leaders of our two countries show the world a good example of friendship, so we will cooperate, become friends, exchange students and teachers, defend dissertations, and conduct scientific research,” Yakov Silin said.

During the meeting, the parties agreed to gather next time in April 2025 during the Eurasian Economic Youth Forum, and before that, the three universities will carry out extensive organizational work and outline specific areas of cooperation.
