YURI ZELENOV: UNEMPLOYMENT AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE RAISES SERIOUS CONCERNS

The 2nd International Scientific and Practical Conference "Recent Problems of Social and Vocational and Economic Integration of Youth into the Regional Social and Production Environment" was held at USUE.

The plenary session was opened by the USUE rector Yakov Silin. He noted: "We are seeing complexity of students’ adaptation to the social and production environment. To receive education is one thing, but to find a decent job, ensuring socialization is a key problem that many graduates face."

The subject of discussion at the conference was the experience of scientists and practitioners in assessing this problem and finding ways to solve it. The meeting was attended by teachers and educators from Russia, Belarus, Serbia, and Uzbekistan.

At the conference, the participants discussed the requirements of employers to the level and quality of students' competencies, the analysis of problems of graduates entering professional environment, and mechanisms of interaction between employers and educational institutions.

The sections worked in two areas: 1) new in building a mechanism for interaction between educational organizations and potential employers for development of professional competencies of students, and 2) issues concerning the development of adaptation  skills of youth to the modern economic environment.

"By 2025, according to forecasts of The Boston Consulting Group, in Russia, there may be a shortage of qualified personnel of 10 million people, and 10 million employees of other categories will have to be retrained by employers," Olga Burganova, director of the Ural College of Construction, Architecture and Entrepreneurship, informed the audience.

Yuri Zelenov, deputy minister of general and vocational education of Sverdlovsk Oblast, cited statistics: "Unemployment among young people raises serious concerns. The world has 71 million unemployed youth aged 15-29 years. According to ROSSTAT, the share of the unemployed was 40.6% of the total unemployed, which amounted to 1 million 729 thousand people. "

What should be done to solve the problem? Speakers offered to provide psychological, pedagogical and medico-social assistance to students, to form their so-called soft skills that will allow them to adapt to the diversification of the labor market, and develop personal competencies: self-management, creativity, critical thinking, and efficient communication. A common position was expressed by Yakov Silin He noted the need for more active cooperation of major employers and regional authorities with universities of the region.
