“Why do you need a war?

A boy Seryozha is our contemporary, whose peaceful childhood is once disrupted by a sudden visit of his great-grandfather, who had died many years ago. This does not frighten a ten-year-old schoolboy, and he talks with a ghost and asks to show him the war, which he knew about only from the Internet, movies, and books.

"Why do you need a war?" the old man asks. “I want to know how they accomplished feats,” the answer follows. And they begin their journey down memory lane - to a nameless village occupied by the Nazis. Here the grandfather again meets his old army comrades, who were given a task to recapture the village from the enemy. But this meeting is bleak because war is dirt and pain. The cost of a feat in war is often human life, and the main character will have to realize this.

“This is a story about patriotism. But it is also a story about growing up,” Fyodor Kozlov, the lead actor, a 2nd -year student at the USUE Institute of Digital Management Technologies and Information Security, says. “The boy goes to war on his own whim. But he quickly becomes convinced that this is not a fun game. And this knowledge transforms him, makes him maturer and wiser. And that's the main message of the show."

The USUE theater studio approaches the military theme for the first time. In May 2021, the Sphere studio presented a literary and musical staging Rio Rita based on the verses of Soviet poets-war veterans. The current production also did not leave the audience indifferent.

A gloomy story,” a student of school No. 82 in Yekaterinburg, Irina Kravtsova, shared her impressions. “But I think it's the right approach. This is the way to talk about the themes of life and death.”

Grandfather's Heart is a play by Vladislav Panfilov based on the story by the Soviet and Russian writer Yuri Yakovlev How Seryozha Went to War. The author is a participant in the war, was wounded during the defense of Moscow, and was awarded the Order of the Great Patriotic War, 2nd class.

The performance Grandfather’s Heart by the Sphere theater studio will be nominated for the stage performance competition “Without a limitation as to period of validity: in the mirror of historical truth”, which is held by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. Final date for applications submission for this competition is July 3, 2023
