Protection against dark patterns

Students of the Institute of Digital Management Technologies and Information Security took second place in the prestigious IT competition, which was held as part of the Ural Forum “Cybersecurity in Finance”.

A team of USUE students called “teamUSUE” made a splash at the Ural Forum “Cybersecurity in Finance”, held in Yekaterinburg. Students Artyom Turyshev, Grigory Golubev, Danil Salalaiko, Ruslan Simbirtsev and Aleksei Shkradyukpresented a program that searches websites for so-called dark or hidden patterns. Dark patterns are psychologically attractive images that encourage Internet users to click on a malicious link. The principle of protection against them is like the work of the well-known Adblok program that blocks pop-up ads. However, so far, the teamUSUE program cannot automatically remove threats and only warns a user that unsafe content is posted on the site.

Artyom Turyshev and Grigory Golubev have long been interested in information security. They first presented the prototype of the program last year in St. Petersburg. Over the past months, the project has been completed in a team with Danil Salalaiko, Ruslan Simbirtsev and Aleksei Shkradyuk, and eventually brought teamUSUE the second place. The significance of the result is reinforced because out of more than a thousand applications for participation in the forum, only eight passed the qualifying stage. All of them were personally noted by the Governor of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation Elvira Nabiullina, who was as a member of the jury.

“We have stopped worrying, because there are people who can solve quickly the most arduous tasks; each of the presented projects was thought out in such a way as to help people, make their lives much better so not to be caught in a cheat’s net,” said the Governor of the RF Central Bank Elvira Nabiullina at the awards ceremony.

This is not the first achievement of USUE senior students. Under their belt, there is the victory in the project program of the XXI All-Russian research-to-practice conference “Security of Information Space - 2022”. At that time, they upstaged representatives of three universities, defending their project on anti-phishing software.
