WE NEED GREAT RUSSIA: A MONUMENT TO PETER STOLYPIN WAS OPENED NEAR USUE IN YEKATERINBURG

On the eve of the City Day, in front of Ural State University of Economics, residents and guests of Yekaterinburg witnessed the grand opening of a monument to Pyotr Stolypin, whose name is associated with major transformations in the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. USUE Rector, Doctor of Economics, Professor Yakov Silin told about the personality of this man, the timeliness of his views concerning the place of our country in the world and why “a young man thinking of his life” should follow his example (Oblastnaya Gazeta, 20.08.2024).

— Yakov Petrovich, how and when was the idea of a monument to Pyotr Stolypin born and why was this person chosen?

— This idea was put forward by entrepreneurs of the regional Union of Small and Medium Businesses and personally by the chairman of the board of this organization, our graduate, a famous industrialist Sergei Leonidovich Mazurkevich. They approached USUE with a proposal to perpetuate the memory of the main reformer of the Russian Empire of the early 20th century, a statesman and patriot, Pyotr Stolypin. Why him? The size of his personality and the scale of transformations he managed to make and outline correspond to the scale of the challenges facing modern Russia. It is of current interest today.

Remember the time when Pyotr Arkadyevich became Minister of Internal Affairs and Chair of the Council of Ministers. 1906 was a year of turmoil: Russia had lost the Russo-Japanese War, the first revolution had occurred, and the economy was declining. The country needed comprehensive and efficient reforms. Under Stolypin’s leadership, they developed reforms of the judicial and financial systems, local government, bills on introducing universal primary education and religious tolerance. And, of course, the agrarian reform, which was labeled as Stolypin’s. Soon after introducing private peasant ownership of land, Russia occupied 25% of the world grain market. And some other changes took place that our ill-wishers did not like. They have always disliked a strengthening and developing Russia. A similar situation runs now. They need weak Russia, and we need Great Russia!
